Four rare medieval and Renaissance Hebrew manuscripts will come to #SothebysNewYork this December in the most valuable sale of its kind in Sotheby’s history. Together, they demonstrate the richness of Jewish book culture at moments of profound creativity.  The group is led by a rare illustrated Mahzor created in Italy circa 1475 by Joel ben Simeon, one of the few named Jewish artists of the medieval period. Its pages are richly embellished with hundreds of drawings that engage directly with the text of the prayers.  Also featured are a 15th-century Italian Roman Rite Mahzor, a monumental Hebrew Bible from Germany circa 1300, and an illuminated manuscript of Moses of Coucy’s Sefer Mitzvot Gadol.  See the collection at the Breuer from 13–16 December before they head to auction in ‘Magnificent Judaica’ on 17 December.
