From Mark Rothko’s important ‘Black Form’ series—a prelude to the Rothko Chapel, the large-scale ‘Untitled (Plum and Dark Brown)’ will star in Modern & Contemporary Art Evening Auction in Hong Kong this month. Though he is often known for his use of light, black and darkness are not anomalies in Rothko’s work. He regarded the more sombre colors, such as deep plum and black, as deeply introspective, facilitating meditative engagement and he had already begun experimenting with darkness before receiving the commission from John and Dominique de Menil that resulted in his Chapel Paintings. Of the 17 works that make up the ‘Black Form’ series, only 4 remain in private hands—including this one. Experience ‘Untitled (Plum and Dark Brown)’ as part of the PSYCHO exhibition at #SothebysHongKong Maison beginning 17 September, ahead of the Modern & Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 28 September, presented in partnership with celine.
