The simplest way to reduce light pollution is often to change where artificial light goes. Unshielded lamps send light upward and sideways, creating glare, wasting energy, and brightening the night sky. A properly shielded fixture directs most of its illumination toward the ground, where it is actually needed. Using lower brightness, warmer colored lighting, timers, and motion sensors can reduce unnecessary illumination even further. The goal is not to eliminate outdoor lighting, but to make it targeted, controlled, and no brighter than necessary.
