Adopting an alter ego can create psychological distance between you and the situation you are facing. This idea is often called the “Batman Effect.” Research found that children who imagined themselves as a character such as Batman showed greater perseverance on a difficult, repetitive task than children who thought from a first person perspective. The distance can make emotions and distractions feel less immediate, allowing you to focus more clearly on the behavior and goals you want to pursue.
