This is a world time zone map, but the unusual part is that it shows how time zones actually bend around countries instead of simply following perfectly straight longitude lines. In theory, Earth can be divided into 24 one hour zones, each roughly 15° of longitude wide. In reality, political borders and national decisions create the strange shapes seen here. India, for example, uses UTC+5:30, while some regions use 45 minute offsets. The vertical lines over the oceans are much closer to the theoretical system, while the jagged boundaries across land reflect where governments have chosen to place their clocks. Near the Pacific, the International Date Line creates another dramatic complication, separating places that can be on different calendar days.
