A stingray looks almost like a strange flying creature when its skeleton is exposed, but its structure is perfectly suited to life on the seafloor. Unlike humans and other bony animals, stingrays have skeletons made mainly of cartilage. Their enormous pectoral fins contain hundreds of slender supporting rays that spread outward from the body. These flexible structures allow the animal to generate lift and thrust while swimming, helping create the smooth, winglike motion that makes rays so distinctive underwater.
