There are patients you remember because of something they said. Others because of their family, their humour, or the way they looked at you when they were frightened. And then there are some you remember simply because it was difficult to witness what they were going through. I still think about a young child I cared for who had cancer and was in significant pain, with very little time left. Seeing someone so young suffer like that stays with you. As doctors, we learn how to treat illness, manage emergencies and make difficult decisions. What is much harder to learn is what to do with the emotions you carry away from those moments. You move on to the next patient because you have to. But that does not mean the last one disappears from your mind. Over years of clinical work, those memories can accumulate.
