Growing up in Nevada, summer rainstorms were my favorite. You’d see the clouds roll in from a distance, casting shadows across the valley floor, ominous in a sea of otherwise blue, desert sky. Thunder claps would lead to a distinct smell in the air — a sweet, pungent, earthy aroma from the lightning. And once the skies opened up and started pouring, you’d feel the heat slowly dissipate around you - like rinsing a hot pan fresh from the stovetop. If you paid close enough attention, you could almost feel the earth sigh beneath your feet.
I suppose that’s why I’ll always love a good rainstorm, especially in the summer. It’s a release. A reason to tilt your head back, exhale and just let go. Or, as was the case for haleybond and I here in Central Park - an excuse to dance to music no one else can hear.
