🇨🇳🐟 They look like fish. They move like fish. But they’re completely robotic. China’s BG-5 Golden Dragon Fish is a 3kg biomimetic underwater robot designed to replicate the movement of real fish. Instead of traditional propellers, it uses a multi-joint tail to swim through the water, reaching speeds of up to 0.6 m/s and diving to around 5 meters. With onboard sensors, the robot can detect obstacles, navigate autonomously and plan its own route. Multiple units can even coordinate and swim together in formation. The technology could eventually be useful for underwater inspection, patrol and surveillance, especially in shallow or confined areas where conventional drones may struggle. China has been developing biomimetic underwater robots for years, including robotic sharks, with one major goal: creating machines that can move through water more quietly and naturally. The BG-5 was showcased at the 2026 China International Fair for Trade in Services. Would you trust a robot like th...
