In 1991, Terminator 2 imagined something that sounded impossible at the time: machines using cloned human voices to communicate.
There’s a clever scene where the T-800 imitates John Connor’s voice and asks a simple question about his dog. The T-1000, pretending to be John’s foster mother, gives the wrong answer.
That tiny detail exposes the machine.
What felt like pure science fiction 35 years ago feels surprisingly relevant today.
AI can now recreate someone’s voice from just a short audio sample, imitate people during phone calls, and even carry on surprisingly realistic conversations with other AI systems.
And that raises a question Terminator 2 was already hinting at decades ago:
If someone’s voice can be replicated almost perfectly, how can you actually know who is speaking to you?
Back then, a question about a dog was enough to expose the fake.
In 2026, verifying who is really on the other end of a conversation is becoming a much bigger challenge.
