Few artists have turned a setting into a visual language quite like David Hockney.
Hockney’s California works captured more than the glamour of Los Angeles. Behind the sun, pools and modernist homes is an ongoing interest in perspective, space and the relationship between people and their surroundings. He experimented with ripples, reflections and splashes, finding different ways to capture the transparency and constant movement of water within otherwise still scenes.
The swimming pool became more than a symbol of California life. It became one of Hockney's most enduring subjects, exploring light, movement, architecture and the people around it.
An everyday image, transformed into an icon of postwar art.
