Bea Miller says she had to get over the idea that embracing pop music somehow made her less cool. At a first-listen event for Mr. Peaked in High School at The Lighthouse Brooklyn, Miller reflected on a period when she distanced herself from some of her older music, even songs that continued to be among the most requested at her shows. Eventually, she said she realized she needed to separate what she thought she was supposed to want as an artist from what she herself would actually enjoy as a fan. Miller partly credits getting older, and letting go of some of the ego she once attached to rejecting pop. “I don’t want to be a pop girl,” she recalled once thinking. Now? “Yeah, I definitely do.” Miller joined pioneering internet artist Molly Soda and creative director Justin Moran for the Republic Records and °1824 event, which concluded with a full listen to the 13-track album.
