Immigrants, some of them undocumented, form the backbone of many of the region’s key industries, from healthcare and tourism to construction and small business. They make up a large part of the workforce in seven industries that together represent nearly 35% of the region's annual economic output of more than $250 billion, based on federal data. Roughly 3,000 Long Islanders have been apprehended by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as of August 6, based on federal records analyzed by Newsday.
