Two cars pulled onto the shoulder of the US 60 in Mesa to change a flat tire. They had finished and were about to get back on the road when a third car hit both of them.
It happened around 1 in the morning on Wednesday, September 16, in the eastbound lanes near Higley Road.
DPS says a woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Five other people were treated for injuries.
The driver of the third car had injuries that were not life threatening. DPS says impairment is suspected in his case.
The next day, troopers identified him as 21 year old Zachary Robert Penrod of Queen Creek, and said he showed signs of impairment and was arrested.
The eastbound lanes were shut down at Higley for most of the early morning and reopened around 6:45.
The woman who died has not been publicly identified. DPS has not said which of the two cars she was in.
All of this comes from the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Impairment is suspected, not established, and nobody has been convicted of anything.
