Former Arizona U.S. Senator Jon Kyl has passed away at 84 after spending nearly three decades representing Arizona in Congress.
Kyl’s family announced Thursday that he passed away due to complications from a neurological disease.
Kyl first entered Congress in 1987, serving eight years in the U.S. House before representing Arizona in the Senate from 1995 to 2013. He eventually rose to Senate minority whip, making him the second-ranking Republican in the chamber.
After retiring, Kyl briefly returned to the Senate in 2018 when he was appointed to fill the seat left vacant following the passing of longtime Arizona Sen. John McCain.
Kyl was also heavily involved in Arizona and Western water policy throughout his career, including major tribal water rights settlements.
Memorial service details will be announced at a later date.
