September 17th is Constitution Day! It is on this day in 1787, the United States Constitution was signed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In honor of today, Channey letterpress printed the first three words of the Constitution in 30 point Engravers Old English font. This font was selected as this is the closest font we have to mimic the handwriting of the words “We The People” on the handwritten copy housed at the National Archives in Washington DC. When the first copies of the Constitution were created in 1787, they were letterpress printed on a wooden common press by the printing office of Dunlap & Claypoole. The font used was Caslon, which is one of the most popular and available fonts of the time. Included in this print is a photo engraving of what that printing press looked like. This was printed with black rubber base ink using a Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #ConstitutionDay #usconstitution #onthisday #museum #sachistorymuseum
