"’The horse has had an accident. He's dead.’ And the phone went dead.” Horse racing journalist Derek Thompson became one of the unlikely negotiators who spoke with the kidnappers of Shergar in 1983. Shergar was a champion Irish racehorse who was stolen in the middle of the night from a farm about 30 miles outside Belfast.
