Five years ago, George Floyd’s life was stolen by the Minneapolis Police Department. Today, we remember him as more than a name in a headline. George was a brother, a son, a friend—a human being with a family who loved him and a community that continues to mourn him. His life was precious. It was full. It should never have been taken. His murder exposed, once again, the brutal truth Black communities have always known: that this country was built on systems that devalue Black life and that state violence is a constant threat. George’s murder was not an isolated incident—it was part of a long, violent American legacy that includes Breonna Taylor, Atatiana Jefferson, and so many others whose names we carry with us. In the days and months that followed, millions of people took to the streets demanding change—not just in Minneapolis, but across the country and the world. That demand has not gone away. A guilty verdict is not the same as justice. Real justice is George Floyd alive today....
