In a last minute push to create emergency green space in Mumbai, the Municipal corporation responded to citizen outrage in an extremely creative way. Their official statement almost quadrupled Mumbai’s green space count putting it closer to London’s count.
According to 2024 data, London had 14.9 per cent land classified as public open spaces, Mumbai’s 3.7 per cent land for open space counted the lowest amongst London and New York. With the introduction of astroturf cladding on existing buildings, and vertical lawns on sun facing surfaces, greening up the city bypassed the definition of “‘natural” green cover. New laws are being drafted as we speak. The access issue was cited as “access for the aviator species of Mumbai, including but not restricted to pigeons, crows and other airborne species”.
