We were saddened to learn of the passing of singer/songwriter/composer Duncan Sheik, who died on Thursday in New York City at the age of 56. Renowned for his alternative pop single, “Barely Breathing,” which became a massive hit from his eponymous debut album in 1996, Sheik also enjoyed tremendous success as the Broadway composer behind Spring Awakening. For the former, he received a BMI Award at the 1996 BMI Pop Awards and a GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, while the latter earned him two Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations in 2006. In 2008, he also won a GRAMMY for Best Musical Show album for Spring Awakening. Over the course of nine studio albums and several scores for stage and theatrical productions, alongside several film scores, Duncan Sheik leaves behind an incomparable creative legacy. He will be greatly missed by his friends, fans and family here at BMI. 🎶💙 #BMIFamily
