Mick Schultz produced the bulk of 'Zendaya,' the actress and singer's self-titled debut studio album, recording it across a wide network of studios spanning Malibu, Los Angeles, North Hollywood, Burbank, and New York City between December 2012 and May 2013. She signed with Hollywood Records that August 2012, not long after wrapping her run on Disney Channel's 'Shake It Up,' and began shaping the project shortly after, working alongside a broad producer lineup that also included Jason Evigan, The Monsters & Strangerz, Nick Jonas, and Jonas Jeberg.
Blending electropop with touches of dubstep, R&B, and urban music, the eleven-track project explored heartbreak and young love, with Zendaya describing her overall sound at the time as pop music carrying an urban edge.
