For Coastal Cleanup Day, here’s a throwback to the time our co-founders Mitty and PaulNicklen came across a mountain of trash on one of Bali’s most famous beaches. Most plastic ends up in the ocean through rivers. Once there, plastic follows one of a few paths: it breaks down into microplastics, gets ingested by marine animals, or drifts until it washes ashore sometimes thousands of kilometers away. Animals that ingest plastic suffer internal injuries and starvation. Microplastics accumulate throughout the food web, humans included. Plastics also act like sponges, concentrating toxic chemicals from surrounding seawater. Even as it degrades, it releases greenhouse gases. Beach cleanups are one of the most direct, tangible ways to help. If you’re free today, consider joining a local cleanup. Or just grab a bag and head to any beach near you, soak up the sunshine, and feel good knowing you made a difference! Don’t live near a beach? Consider supporting organizations like SungaiWatch ...
