What’s the fastest way to learn the classic “beauty light” set-up? Well the first thing to do is keep it simple with just one flash. Then move the light a little, take a set photo and review the changes. This exactly the approach photographer Gavin Hoey takes with this timeless lighting technique.
Gavin starts by looking at finding the right height for the light and showing why putting the light too high results in dark eyes with no catchlights.
Next Gavin explores what happens when the single flash is set further from his model. Is a small speedlight enough to do beauty lighting at a distance? More importantly Gavin tests how far from a model should the flash be set.
Finally Gavin has one more change to test and this time it’s a rule breaker. Beauty light is traditionally flat, front light BUT what happens when you break that rule? Gavin moves the single speedlight and softbox slightly off centre and the results might surprise you!
