Spooky Sunday mornings in Denver hit a little different when your family walk turns into a history lesson.
In 1858, this area became part of Denver’s first cemetery. By 1890, the city wanted a park instead.
Here’s where it gets wild:
Roughly 5,000 graves needed to be relocated.
In 1893, an undertaker was hired to move the bodies for $1.90 each. He was accused of cutting up corpses to fit them into smaller coffins.
The project was never finished. Denver Public Library estimates approximately 4,200 bodies were left behind beneath what is now Cheesman Park.
And the old cemetery grounds extended into present-day Congress Park, where we’re spending our Sunday morning looking for sunken graves.
Just a normal Sunday family outing in Denver.
Would you walk through a park knowing thousands of people were buried there?
