McLaren’s new wordmark may look modern, but its roots trace all the way back to Bruce McLaren’s family beginnings in New Zealand.
The distinctive “Mc” treatment was inspired by the sign above the service station in Remuera, Auckland, owned by Bruce’s parents, Les and Ruth McLaren.
Bruce worked around that garage and built the car there that would eventually take him to his first racing victory, making the workshop an important part of the McLaren origin story.
McLaren’s racing identity would later evolve from the original 1964 Kiwi crest to the Speedy Kiwi, chevrons and eventually the familiar Speedmark, so changing logos has been part of the brand’s history for more than 60 years.
Knowing the new design reaches back to Bruce McLaren’s family roots, does the rebrand make more sense to you?
