Alcohol use in the U.S. has dipped for the first time since the pandemic, with overall drinking falling by about 1% between 2022 and 2024. The decline was driven largely by younger adults, with Gen Z reporting the biggest drop in drinking while millennials saw a sharp decrease in heavy drinking. But the trend was very different among adults ages 50 to 64, whose drinking continued to rise - with heavy drinking in the group up by more than 30% since 2018. Researchers say the findings show that the post-pandemic shift in alcohol use is far from uniform, with drinking habits changing differently across generations.
