The US plans to re-establish a mothballed military base in southern Greenland and establish another on the island’s east coast, according to people familiar with the matter.
The sites are Narsarsuaq, home to the former US Bluie West One base, and Mestersvig, a military outpost currently used by Denmark’s Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.
The bases are part of a new agreement expected to be signed by the US, Denmark and Greenland at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
The agreement’s text has not been made public, and sources said details could still change before it is signed.
The White House declined to comment on the specific plans, saying the agreement would “secure and defend the security of Greenland and the United States.”
