Music items from former The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr’s personal collection have sold for more than £3.6 million ($4.8 million) at Christie’s in London.
The 111-lot auction raised more than three times the total pre-sale estimates. It included 10 guitars, vintage posters, amplifiers, tape recorders and other equipment.
The top-selling item was Marr’s 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo, which he played on The Smiths’ 1984 single “This Charming Man.” Estimated at $80,000 to $107,000, it sold for £280,000 (£375,000).
His 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355, bought for him by Sire Records founder Seymour Stein in New York in 1984, sold for £160,000 ($214,000).
Marr is donating the full hammer price from 31 lots to Guide Dogs for the Blind and the National Autistic Society.
The guitarist said the auction had “exceeded all my expectations.” His new album, The Age Of Everything, is due for release on October 2.
