A solar-powered ambulance believed to be the first of its kind is being tested in Kenya, with the aim of bringing healthcare to remote communities while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and the electricity grid.
Known as Stella Juva, the vehicle was developed by students from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.
The team says unreliable access to fuel and electricity can limit the ability of healthcare workers to reach patients in remote areas.
The ambulance could help medical teams carry out diagnostic screenings, monitor mothers and babies, and transport patients for further treatment, according to Kenyan healthcare organization AMREF.
The vehicle can travel up to 715 kilometers on a single charge under favorable conditions, with a top speed of 120 kilometers per hour.
