September 1960: Edward Turner flew to Japan, toured the factories, and wrote his board a report on what he’d seen. They read it. Nothing changed. In 1975 the Boston Consulting Group gave the British industry’s mistake a name — “segment retreat". British firms abandoned small cheap motorcycles rather than fight Honda at the bottom and lost the volume that pays for tooling. By 1963, Honda alone was outproducing the entire British industry.
