In 1994, a small Italian factory led the 500cc World Championship at the midpoint of the season. No Japanese backing. No unlimited budget. Just their own V4 two-stroke engine and a rider named John Kocinski who nobody could stop. Cagiva had been in 500cc GP racing since 1980. Eddie Lawson rode for them in 1992. In 1994, Kocinski won actual races against Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki factory machinery. The title went to Mick Doohan. Cagiva withdrew after the season.
