On May 20th, 1973, two of the fastest motorcycle racers in the world didn't finish the race. Jarno Saarinen was leading both the 250cc and 500cc world championships. Renzo Pasolini was the home crowd's champion. On lap three at Monza, an oil slick at the Curva Grande took them both down. Seven other riders fell in the same corner. Neither Saarinen nor Pasolini survived. Giacomo Agostini refused to race. The FIM cancelled two world championship classes mid-season.
