there is something about django unchained that feels almost biblical to me. at its core, django is a story about freedom, beginning in chains and ending on horseback. he loses almost everything, finds his way back to the person he loves, and then walks straight back into hell to get her out. it’s obviously a very tarantino way of storytelling; blood, revenge, absurd amounts of violence, intense dialogue, a soundtrack that has absolutely no business going as hard as it does and leonardo dicaprio casually giving one of the most disturbing performances of his career. underneath all of that, there is this almost faith driven structure to django’s journey. bondage to freedom, purpose, failure and rising up once more even the religious imagery throughout the film is interesting because tarantino constantly puts ideas of faith, sin, judgement and damnation next to some truly horrific human behaviour. there is something particularly fucked up about watching people use the language of god and t...
