In September 1948, Alderman Allan Lamport commissioned a series of photographs along the east and west sides of Yonge, documenting the street prior to the building of the Yonge Subway line. The conditions were photographed as the city considered widening the street, however the TTC and the Planning Board argued that the estimated expenditure of over $9,000,000 would not be necessary once the Yonge subway was built, and the streetcar tracks were removed from Yonge Street. The proposed idea was shelved. These images provide us with a fascinating snapshot of the streetscape, showing a few recognizable buildings, and many more that are long gone.
