Professional photographers are hyper fixated on backgrounds. We know what’s in the foreground and we actively try to make the backgrounds clean so the subject in the foreground is a quicker read - nothing ruins a great action photo like a parking lot, empty stands or, heaven forbid, a porta-potty. I’ve shot plenty of youth and high school sports and there are times when you just can’t find a decent background but you work for it and work for it until you find it. A distracting background takes away from a good photo and a good background makes the foreground image even better.
