The snout-standing gharial 🐊
Say hello to the gharial, a crocodilian with a truly iconic nose. Male gharials sport a bump called a ghara, which they use to make buzzing sounds and blow bubbles. These reptiles are built for swimming, so when it’s time to move between bodies of water, they skip the stroll and belly-slide instead.
Unique as they are, gharials are critically endangered. Habitat loss and overfishing are putting these resilient reptiles at risk, which is why San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance works alongside partners to support gharial conservation in their native habitats.
