Nigerian innovator Ukachi Benita has developed an AI-powered hardware device called Aquamanne to help aquaculture farmers monitor water quality and reduce fish mortality. Benita created the prototype during a Google Gemma hackathon after a water quality crisis wiped out thousands of fish on her family's farm. The system uses environmental sensors connected to an ESP32 microcontroller to monitor dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH levels in real time. The collected data is processed locally using Google’s open Gemma AI model, which translates complex water parameters into simple recommendations sent straight to the farmer’s mobile app. Currently partnering with embedded systems engineers and researchers, Benita's team is upgrading the hardware to reduce power reliance, enable remote monitoring, and add native language support. The project highlights the growing trend of deploying edge-AI hardware to solve critical agricultural challenges in Africa. Source: Punch Newspapers / TechC...
