Imagine waking up winning an award in the Olympics 😳
The Olympics once awarded gold medals for creativity.
From 1912 through 1948, artists competed in painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, and music. Every entry had to be inspired by sports.
One of the most fascinating winners was Walter Winans. His bronze sculpture, An American Trotter, won gold in 1912. Winans also earned Olympic medals in shooting, making him a medalist in both sport and art.
The competitions ended after 1948 because most artists were professionals, which conflicted with the Olympics’ amateur rules at the time.
Today, these art medals are no longer included in official Olympic medal totals.
Should painting, design, music, and sculpture return to the Olympics?
