Sept 19th is Paulo Freire's birthday. He is best known for his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, in which teaching is reimagined as a political act of liberation rather than critical cultural transmission of values. We are fed narratives on who is allowed to resist oppression, and what "justified" or "proportionate" resistance looks like. We are not taught to question the power structures which uphold oppression. It becomes entirely normalised. And yet, oppression is inherently violent. I invite you to question - from Cop City to Palestine, from struggles against ecological devastation and inequality - around the world and in your community - who gets labelled a "t*rr0rist". Who provokes the violence? Where does it begin? How does it end? If we hold the truth that oppression IS violence, then the end of violence requires not only the ceasing of gunfire. It requires a complete deconstruction of the system which first provoked it. Slides by michellekimkim #paulofreire #educationispow...
