#Opinion: More than 125 Michigan cities and counties now operate Automated License Plate Reader systems, yet Michigan has no law governing them. The lack of oversight is especially disconcerting given the facts that the data ALPRs collect is available to law enforcement agencies outside the state, the alerts they generate are frequently incorrect and officers use them for personal purposes. Due to the invasive nature of ALPRs, Michigan should regulate them. Most of these cameras are operated by Flock Safety, a private company whose ALPRs scan each passing license plate and compare it against police department databases. Police departments run searches on behalf of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Patrol, agencies that have brutalized and killed innocent civilians.
