On this day in 1944, James Earl Rudder '32 and the usarmy 2nd Ranger Battalion began the daring and dangerous mission of the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc in Normandy, France. The soldier successfully scaled the 90-foot cliffs and destroyed six enemy cannons capable of reaching Allied ships as far as 14 miles away.
