We’re pleased to share news that female Komodo dragon, Raya, continues to make encouraging progress following her surgical procedure earlier this month 🦎
She is nearly back to her usual self, eating consistently, and continues to take her post-operative medications.
The procedure came as a result of recent, concerning changes in her behaviour and appearance.
Raya was showing signs of illness that included lethargy, decreased appetite, and a distended belly. After multiple diagnostics were performed, she was taken for exploratory surgery where reproductive disease was confirmed. During the surgery, both of Raya’s ovaries were removed since they were the main source of her illness. At just under 5 years old, Raya is at the younger end of Komodo sexual maturity.
Many Zoo guests and members were able to watch Raya’s surgery firsthand through the viewing gallery of our Wildlife Health & Science Centre, offering a unique window into the expertise, collaboration and care that happens...
