Evanston, Illinois built a reparations program to correct a wrong the city itself caused. The Trump administration is suing to shut it down. The city allocated $20 million, giving $25,000 to Black residents who could prove their families lived there during decades of housing segregation caused by a 1921 zoning law. The DOJ now calls the program discriminatory, saying "handing out money based on race" isn't the answer. The woman who led the research behind it says the targeting was intentional, meant to match the harm that was just as targeted. This case could set a precedent for reparations programs nationwide.
