From possessing complex social hierarchies to astonishing self healing abilities, highly sophisticated senses, and evolutionary adaptations that have allowed them to reign as one of the oceans top predators for 11 million years. They can also live upwards of 70 years, but this long lifespan comes at cost. Females don’t sexually mature until upwards of 30 years old, making their population, and chances of reproduction, extremely susceptible to human threats such as bycatch and entanglement.
