Georgian law: one crime, two punishments. In March 1789, Catherine Murphy was walked past her husband’s hanging body outside Newgate Prison, strangled, then burned at the stake for coining. The law called it decency. She was the last woman England ever burned. Parliament ended the punishment in 1790. Decency, deterrence, or control? Send this to someone who’s never heard her name. #BritishHistory #WomensHistory #GeorgianHistory
