In 1869, Susannah Palmer’s husband took everything she owned and sold it — and the law let him. He had beaten her for years. Apart from him at last, she worked and kept her children on her own wages. Everything they had, she paid for. But under English law, a wife’s wages belonged to her husband. So did everything she bought with them. She stabbed him. She was convicted and sent to prison. He was never punished. In 1870, Parliament finally let married women keep their own wages. Too late for Susannah. Send this to someone who thinks the law was ever neutral. #BritishHistory #WomensHistory #VictorianHistory
