In 1873 a girl of eleven named Ellen Woodman was photographed at Newcastle City Gaol, sentenced to seven days hard labour. She was four foot three.
Her crime was stealing scrap iron, alongside Rosanna Watson (13), Mary Hinnigan (13) and Mary Catherine Docherty (14). None had a previous conviction, and no newspaper thought it worth reporting.
The law didn’t stop sending children to adult prisons until 1908.
