One of the biggest keys to running a faster 40-yard dash is understanding body position during acceleration.
Early in the sprint, your torso angle should closely match your shin angle. This allows you to apply force back into the ground and project your body forward.
If you stand up too early, you lose horizontal force.
If you reach with your feet, you create braking forces.
If you force yourself to stay low, you disrupt natural acceleration.
The goal is simple:
Push. Project. Rise gradually.
Think of an airplane taking off from the runway. It’s a gradual rise. ✈️
As your shin angles become more vertical, your torso should rise with them until you transition into upright sprint mechanics.
Zaylin Wood executed the technique perfectly at the 2026 Vanderbilt Pro Day. He ran an official 4.70-second 40-yard dash, making him one of the fastest defensive tackles in the country.
