Research suggests exposure to religious teachings can shape how young children judge extraordinary stories. In a study of 5 and 6 year olds, children with religious exposure were more likely to regard characters in stories involving miracles as real, while children without religious exposure were more likely to classify them as pretend. The effect also appeared in fantastical stories. The findings suggest that children's understanding of what is possible is influenced partly by their social and religious environment and upbringing.
