In 1952, Kent introduced its Micronite filter, which was promoted as a major advance in cigarette filtration. The problem was that the original filter contained crocidolite, a form of asbestos. Studies later confirmed that asbestos fibers could enter the smoke during use. The asbestos containing filter remained in production until at least 1956, exposing smokers to a hazardous material directly connected to the cigarette they were inhaling.
